2017 Two Wood Championship

Dave Betteridges journey in this competition

In the last 16 of the Wiltshire Two Wood competition he went to Royal Wootton Bassett on a Saturday evening in early July to play last years County Singles Champion and friend Dave Godwin (ex Trowbridge Town Bowls Club player). Result after a excellent match a 14 - 11 win for D.B.
So on to quarter and semi finals at Devizes on Sunday July 16th.  In the morning he played Middleton Cup and Amesbury player Tom Warner winning  16 - 10. Shortly after lunch he was back on the green to play ex Trowbridge Town and multiple County Champion over recent years Wayne Simmonds, who he defeated 14 - 9, thereby booking a place in the National Championships at Leamington Spa in late August.
A fortnight later also at Devizes the final was contested and he defeated Junior Champion Kyle Anderson of Royal Wootton Bassett also 14 -9 despite having pulled a muscle in his bowling arm earlier in the week.
Off to National Bowls Championships at Royal Leamington Spa on Monday 28th August in a bad state of nervous anxiousness , feeling a bit better he took on Matt Flatman of Norfolk at 9.30am on Tues 29th August.  In his first round   on a tricky outside rink, playing very well he won 16 – 10 on the 19th end, having  always been at least 3 shots in the lead from the second end.
Next match at 12 noon again on a very tricky outside rink, and not  finding his length very well, he was soon 11 -1 down, a bit of a fight back over the next few ends, but his opponent David Gedney (Spalding Town, Lincs)  ran out the winner on the 19th end 16 shots to 9.
So ends this very good run, an achievement to get to the finals (the ambition of all competitive bowlers).

Better luck (or skill)     Next year
